SAN DIEGO (Press Release) –The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on Monday condemned the apparent hate crime against an employee of the Consulate of Mexico in San Diego who was riding a bus in National City on Sunday May 15. Without any provocation, the aggressor used anti-Mexican expletives and caused physical harm to the victim.
Tammy Gillies, ADL San Diego Regional Director, issued the following statement:
“We condemn this assault apparently fueled by bigotry and hatred. Our thoughts first go out to the victim, but hate crimes have a devastating impact beyond just the person targeted. When a perpetrator selects a victim because of his or her ethnicity—or any other immutable characteristic—it can leave the entire community feeling fearful, vulnerable, and isolated.”
We commend the National City Police and San Diego County District Attorney for their swift action in arresting the alleged perpetrator and pursuing hate crime charges.
