SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) announced Wednesday it is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the hateful graffiti on a sign celebrating the new UCSD Hillel center in La Jolla this past weekend.
“We hope this reward facilitates the quick apprehension of whoever is behind this hateful vandalism” said Tammy Gillies, ADL San Diego Regional Director. “The graffiti, which includes lettering similar to a swastika, and derogatory language impacts the entire community. This kind of hateful message is meant to be troubling to all who see it, but especially to the Jewish community targeted by this anti-Semitism and vandalism. We commend the San Diego Police Department for investigating these hateful acts.”
Earlier this year, the ADL released its Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents for 2017, which reported a 60 percent spike in anti-Semitic incidents nationally. In San Diego, incidents of hate toward the Jewish community increased 41 percent over the 2016 reported incidents, with a steep incline of reported incidents affecting on college campuses.
ADL works locally and nationally to equip college campuses with the skills to respond to biased and hateful incidents, including facilitated trainings, such as Think.Plan.Act to respond to anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias. ADL also trains critical networks of campus administrators and law enforcement in addressing issues of hate on campus through our Hate/Uncycled program to empower school communities in the aftermath of hate.
