LA JOLLA, California (SDJW) — Retired Economics Prof. Lawrence Krause has been notified by UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla that he will be awarded the 2019 Revelle Medal during the university’s Founders Celebration on Friday, Nov. 15.
Krause, who lives in retirement at Seacrest Village in Encinitas, writes a column on world affairs and economics for San Diego Jewish World.
Khosla said his Chancellor’s Cabinet considered Krause’s “exemplary, loyal and sustained commitment to UC San Diego” as exemplified by his “leadership in the founding of the School of Global Policy and Strategy and serving as its first faculty member, followed by founding the Korea-Pacific Program.”
The chancellor also cited Krause’s “outstanding scholarly contributions to the field of Asia-Pacific relations and economic cooperation” and Krause’s “personal philanthropic support of the Korea-Pacific Program which has provided hundreds of graduate students an opportunity to study the economics and politics in this important region and offer summer internships to further their specialization.”
The Revelle Award was named for Roger Revelle, the Scripp’s Institution of Oceanography’s director from 1950 to 1964 who trailblazed the creation of UC San Diego.
The award, according to Khosla, is presented to someone who has provided “sustained, distinguished and extraordinary service to the campus.”
“We congratulate Dr. Krause on winning this award and feel so very privileged to list him among our publication’s regular contributors,” commented San Diego Jewish World co-publisher and editor Donald H. Harrison.
