Established by Dr. Robert Rubenstein, in memory of his son David, the JFS-David Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship provides grants to students from San Diego’s Jewish community who plan to attend college or vocational school. The program awards scholarships of up to $5,000, based on financial need, academic performance, and community involvement.

The JFS-David Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship seeks to encourage young people to treasure their Jewish heritage, reflect on their Jewish values, and better understand their connection to the community.

Since 2009, 137 students have received a total of $602,300 in scholarships from the JFS-David Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship. The 26 recipients during the current 2021-2022 academic year are attending UC Berkeley, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Palomar College, UC Los Angeles, San Diego State University, Texas A&M University, Smith College, UC Santa Cruz, Northwestern University, University of Alabama, The George Washington University, San Diego Mesa College, UC San Diego, UC Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of Redlands, and Sonoma State University.

One scholarship recipient shared, “This scholarship plays an important role in allowing me to pursue higher education, with less time and effort spent worrying about finances.”

It is Dr. Rubenstein’s hope that receiving the scholarship inspires recipients who feel supported by their Jewish community to embrace their Jewish heritage and live out our Jewish values in their professional careers or personal pursuits now and in the future.

The JFS-David Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship is part of the JFS Center for Jewish Care. Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year are due no later than April 8, 2022. Learn more and apply at www.jfssd.org/scholarship. For any questions, contact Maiya Haberman at scholarship@jfssd.org.
