A cousin’s funeral has her wondering about her own legacy

By Cailin Acosta in La Mesa, California

I attended the funeral Friday morning of my second cousin, Russ Christensen, and learned so much about him from all the speakers.

When I was a child, he was more like an uncle to me.

My husband had to work, but said he enjoyed all the computer programming talk they shared and “they spoke the same language.”

His grandson, Archer Christensen, shared a poem by Shel Silverstein:

WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS

There is a place where the sidewalk ends.
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight.
To cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black.
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go.
To the place where the sidewalk ends.
Yes, we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we’ll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know.
The place where the sidewalk ends.

Many tears were shed and hugs shared. But the service had me wonder, in my humbleness, quietness, and refusal of affirmations, what legacy would I be leaving behind?

My wish is to leave behind positive love and happiness. As I witnessed today, my second cousin will be missed, but his legacy of kindness, a listening ear, and devotion to mentoring and volunteering will resonate with the next generation.
