Former Congressman Eliot Engel dies at 79

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release) — Brian Romick, President & CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, released the following statement concerning Friday’s death of former Rep. Eliot Engel (D-New York.)

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Eliot Engel, a devoted public servant to his constituents in Westchester and the Bronx, a tireless advocate for democracy and global security, and a steadfast champion of the U.S.-Israel relationship. As Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he was a fierce leader who advanced American interests and promoted peace and security.

“On a personal note, it was a privilege and an honor to witness his leadership up close during my years on Capitol Hill.

“All of us at Democratic Majority for Israel extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who were touched by his life and service. May his memory be a blessing.”

Engel was 79.  He served more than 10 years in the New York Assembly before being elected to 16 terms in Congress.
