On the first evening (Sunday night, Sept. 20) of Yom Kippur and the following day, rabbis across Michigan will devote part of their sermons to five “non-negotiables” that they hope Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed will honor.
- Jewish safety, including the safety of Zionist Jews, is nonnegotiable.
- The right of Jews to define their own identities is nonnegotiable.
- Jewish sovereignty in Israel is nonnegotiable.
- The full participation of Jews, including Zionist Jews, in American political life is nonnegotiable.
- An affirmative vision for a better future for the Middle East is nonnegotiable.

The San Diego Union-Tribune ran a long feature starting on its front page telling the plight of private security guards: high-risk often low-paid work protecting people. The article, originating with Kurtis Lee of The New York Times, reported: “The private security market is a growing $50 billion industry, but security guards earn a little less than $19 an hour, about 73 cents for every dollar earned by the typical U.S. worker …”
The article was keyed to Congregation Beth Israel hiring more security guards to keep watch over the Yom Kippur holiday.

Times of San Diego reports that the same house on Elm Street in Imperial Beach was vandalized by expressions of antisemitism for the last two weekends.
