WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release) — Brian Romick, President and CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, made the following statement on Sunday:
“The U.S.-Israel relationship has endured for 78 years based on shared interests and values, not on who happens to be Prime Minister at any given time. President Trump’s suggestion that U.S. backing for Israel’s security hinges on Israelis reelecting Benjamin Netanyahu is irresponsible and reckless. It does America and Israel no favors. Rhetoric like that is how a bipartisan, ironclad commitment becomes a political football and sends a message to our allies around the world that America’s support is unreliable. President Trump should retract his remarks and reaffirm America’s commitment to Israel’s security.
“A fundamental principle of democracies is the right of the people to elect their own government free from the interference of outside forces.
“Whoever Israelis elect should have an ally in Washington. That’s what partnership means in practice.”
