SAN DIEGO — A relatively few Jewish Democrats were endorsed by the San Diego County Democratic Party for offices on the March 3 primary ballot.  In headliner races, they were passed over for their opponents.

For example, in the hotly contested 53rd Congressional District, from which Susan Davis is retiring, the local Democratic organization chose San Diego City Councilwoman Georgette Gomez over her opponent Sara Jacobs, a scholar in residence at USD’s Kroc Center for Peace and Justice, and granddaughter of Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs.

In the equally hot race for mayor of San Diego, the local Democrats picked Assemblyman Todd Gloria instead of San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry.

In the 78th Assembly District, the county party selected San Diego City Councilman Chris Ward, turning aside the bids of two Jewish candidates Micah Perlin and Sarah Davis.

In the race for San Diego City Attorney, the Democratic committee picked incumbent Mara Elliott rather than her challenger, attorney Cory Briggs.

Jewish candidates were not completely shut out, however.

In the 75th Assembly District, the Democratic Committee selected Kate Schwartz for its endorsement.

Attorney Roberta Winston, who has served San Diego’s Jewish community as a cantorial soloist, received the nod for Superior Court Office No. 18.

Terra Lawson-Remer shared an endorsement in the 3rd County Supervisorial District with Escondido City Councilwoman Olga Diaz.  Both are running against incumbent Kristin Gaspar.

And, Bernie Rhinerson was endorsed for reelection to the District B seat on the San Diego Community College Board.

Five from StandWithUs attending AIPAC conference in March
Among San Diegans planning to attend the March 1-3  policy conference of the America Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington, D.C. are a quintet of StandWithUs activists: Caron & Dr. Joshua Feder, and Cailey, Nat, and Sharon Koren.  The timing of the conference is interesting: it will come after the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, during Israel’s March 2 Knesset elections and during California’s March 3 presidential primary election.

High school student’s documentary tells story of Israel’s creation
Cameron Jessop, a high school student in Utah, last year produced Next Year in Jerusalem: How American Volunteers Helped Survivors Sail From the Tragedy of the Holocaust to the Jewish Triumph of the State of Israel, a documentary that won the school, district, regional, and state contests.  Our correspondent in Kfar Saba, Israel, Steve Kramer, was alerted to this documentary by Murray Greenfield, the publisher of Gefen Books who participated in the American effort to smuggle Jews into British Mandatory Palestine.  We are pleased to include this remarkable video (above) in our daily report.

*Terra Lawson-Remer, a candidate in the 3rd county supervisorial district, says if she is successful defeating incumbent Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, “I will fight to make sure every child has an opportunity to succeed by making childcare affordable for every family in San Diego County.  Working with accredited childcare centers, we can implement a new statewide law to increase the number of skilled, trained, and unionized childcare providers in San Diego County.  Subsidized assistance will be scaled to household income, so every household pays a fair share, while all children receive the care they need.”

*State Sen. Brian Jones (R-Santee), a candidate in the open 50th Congressional District, will participate in a Town Hall meeting at the Borrego Springs branch of the San Diego County Library, 2580 Country Club Road, beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 1.
