WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release)–Majdal Nijem, 15, of the Palestinian Territories is one of two winners in a U.S. State Department photo contest called “postcards from home.” Her photo, “Frames,” taken near the crossing from Israel into the West Bank near Ramallah, shows the controversial wall between the Palestinian Territories and Israel in the background, and a boy in the foreground, making frames with his fingers.
The wall, wrote Nijem, “frames every Palestinian’s life.”
The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announced that it will award both Nijem and Mary Spano of New York “with new netbook computers and their photographs will be displayed prominently at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.” Spano’s photograph showed a scene in New York City’s Central Park
“Eighteen runners-up from around the world will receive t-shirts and postcards featuring the top 20 submissions. To view the winning entries, please visit ExchangesConnect.
