Ed Rendell was born January 5, 1944 to Emma Sloat and Jesse T. Rendell, children of Russian Jewish immigrants. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and the Villanova University School of Law, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a second lieutenant from 1968 to 1974.

He was elected in 1977 as Philadelphia’s youngest district attorney, winning a second term in 1981.  He campaigned unsuccessfully for mayor of Philadelphia in 1987, but subsequently won in 1991 and 1995.  He was elected as Pennsylvania’s governor in 2002 and 2006.

Later, he became a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, while also practicing law.  He and Marjorie Osterlund married in 1971, raised one son Jesse, and divorced in 2011.  Marjorie was appointed by President Bill Clinton as a federal circuit judge.  Ed Rendell,  a devoted sports fan, has served as a commentator on the Philadelphia Eagles postgame show.
