Today’s Jewish Birthday: Bonnie Franklin

Bonnie Franklin (January 6, 1944-March 1, 2013) was remembered for her role as the single mother Ann Romano in the 1975-1984 television series One Day at a Time. Created by Norman Lear, the series addressed a variety of social issues including premarital sex, sexual harassment, and suicide.

Franklin’s parents were Claire Hersch and Samuel Benjamin Franklin. Her father helped to found a B’nai B’rith chapter in Beverly Hills, where Bonnie graduated high school in 1961. She graduated from UCLA in 1966. She appeared in 1970 in  Applause  on Broadway, singing the show’s title song. Through much of her career, she starred in regional theatre productions in addition to her television roles.

Franklin ended a four-year marriage with playwright Ronald Sossi in 1970. Ten years later she married film producer Marvin Minoff.  Jed and Julie Minoff became her stepchilden. Franklin died from pancreatic cancer four years after her husband.
