SAN DIEGO — Temple Emanu-El’s Rabbi Devorah Marcus will be honored with the Equality Award at the 16th Annual San Diego Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on Friday, May 24, starting at 7:30 am. This event will be held at the Marriot Mission Valley.
Established in 2009, the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast brings together diverse San Diegans who support equality and justice, commemorating the memory of the late San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, who was the first public official to come out as a gay man.
Proceeds from the event benefit the programs and services of The Center in Hillcrest. According to Today’s Jewish Birthday, Harvey Milk, who was Jewish, would be celebrating his 94 birthday today.

Screening of the film The City Without Jews (1924) is a collaboration of the House of Israel and Yiddishland with live musical accompaniments by Alicia Svigals (violinist/composer) and Donald Sosin (pianist/composer). San Diego Hebrew Day Preschool recently had a Yom Ha’atzma’ut Fair. Curiosity and creativity were sparked by the little hands that created the flag of Israel with blue playdough. The preschoolers crafted vibrant beaded necklaces to represent Israel’s beautiful and bright landscapes. A sensory exploration and safari of the sandy dunes of the Negev Desert included hidden toy camels to find in the sand.
The tykes were served traditional Israeli treats of Bamba, Bissili, pickles, olives, and fresh squeezed orange juice. Cupcakes adorned with blue and white frosting made by the young pastry chefs were enjoyed by all in attendance.

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS
Congressmembers Sara Jacobs (D-San Diego) and Jen Kiggans (R-Virginia) introduced legislation for the co-location of military child care and housing. In a statement, Jacobs said: “Having a safe and affordable place to live and raise your kids is a critical component of our national security; because without it, our service members can’t focus on their mission. But in San Diego alone, the childcare waitlist is 2,600 spots long and was recently up to 4,000. Many service members sleep in their cars or on friend’s couches because they can’t find housing. And if they’re lucky enough to find it, the housing options can have serious deficiencies that threaten the health and safety of families, especially young children.”

A little Jewish humor is good for the soul. Rabbi Rafi Andrusier of Chabad of El Cajon passes along this story: “Bush was very curious about how the Jewish people knew everything before he did. So, he called the FBI and asked them to figure it out. One week later they came back and said, ‘Mr. President, the Jews have something called Shabbas. They meet each other at the synagogue and use a code. They sit, they pray, and there is a word that is the key to this secret. This word is “Nu?” When one says to another, “Nu?” the other tells him everything, every bit of news.’ Bush wanted to see this for himself. So, the FBI dressed him like a Hassid and taught him to read from the right to the left of the siddur. Bush arrived at a synagogue on Shabbas and sat beside Issy. He waited for a moment, and said, ‘Nu?’ Issy answered, ‘Shh, don’t talk now, Bush is coming.'”
