Touring congressman decries Hamas participation in Palestinian government

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release)- Congressman Steve Chabot (OH-1) is traveling in the Middle East. Congressman Chabot is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia and is visiting Israel, Egypt and Jordan.  He released the following statement regarding his meetings with the Israeli and Palestinian Prime Ministers:

“I was deeply disturbed to hear reports of potential Hamas participation in the Palestinian government. By welcoming Hamas–a terrorist organization that’s stated goal is the total destruction of the State of Israel–into power, the Palestinian government is stating loudly and clearly that it is not a genuine partner for peace.  Over the past two days I have met with both Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Palestinian Prime Minister Fayyad and I am very concerned about the impact this will have on the prospects for peace. This development will have significant implications for the U.S.-Palestinian relationship and the U.S. must now seriously reconsider its aid to the Palestinian Authority.  U.S. taxpayer money should under no circumstance go to a Palestinian government whose members do not all  recognize the State of Israel’s right to exist, renounce terrorism, and abide by previous agreements.

It is my sincere hope that the Palestinian government will act responsibly in this situation and by doing so assure the United States, Israel, and the international community that it is a true partner for peace.”
