It takes a lot of chutzpah to open a theatre at a time when funding for the arts is at a low. It takes even more chutzpah to open a second location in these uncertain economic times. But that’s exactly what brothers, Sean and Connor Boyd have, in great supply!
In 2012, Sean Boyd founded a non-profit theatre company that made its home in Mission Valley Mall. Trinity Theatre Company (TTC) was created to “render productions of great societal value in hopes of unifying friends, family, and community.” This unique opportunity came about because the internet made shopping online so easy. Attendance at malls was dropping providing a golden opportunity to bring performance arts to commercial spaces. Sean Boyd was thrilled to see this new model succeed and bring the community together, all while building partnerships with corporate neighbors.
Trinity Theatre’s successful seasons have emboldened the Boyd brothers to seek out new venues in North County, to offer year-round community theatre and educational opportunities to those who live north of the 8. With this in mind, they have leased a second space at The Shoppes at Carlsbad. Managed by the Spinoso Group, the 5,000 square foot space will provide North Country residents with new opportunities to connect and celebrate the arts.
In an effort to serve the community most effectively, Boyd has created a survey so that Trinity Theatre Company can tailor their offerings to the demographic they’re serving. Learn more about the Carlsbad space and take the survey HERE. And while the surveys are being tallied, under the management of Connor Boyd, auditions for The Addams Family will be held at the end of August. This is a theatre school production and the actors will range from 8-18 years old.
San Diego has often been recognized for its inclusive and collaborative theatre community. In this vein, TTC will collaborate with Kristianne Kurner’s Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center in Carlsbad. Boyd stated that Trinity will work with North County schools including Carlsbad High School, Sage Creek, Oceanside, San Marcos and Encinitas to maximize engagement and serve the communities. The arts can serve as a centerpiece, uniting residents in a community space.
To celebrate the new space and occupant, there will be an open house, on September 19. This event will run from 11 a.m. to 9 pm, and will provide an opportunity to meet Regional Director Connor Boyd and Jaelyne Sanchez.
“Sean is bold and takes risks,” Connor told me. His courage has definitely paid off, as Trinity Theatre Company produces high-quality theatre and boasts an active education program. Sean has a Master’s in Education and a BA in Theatre Arts, while Connor majored in theatre and has acted all over San Diego. Both have a sincere interest and great experience in Arts Education for all ages.
The Boyds anticipate a warm welcome for Trinity Theatre Carlsbad and while no one can predict where donors will come from, they hope to keep ticket prices affordable and will offer scholarships when possible. Theatres are always looking for support in the form of volunteers, human resources, fundraisers and committed folks who share the vision that the arts are a worthwhile investment benefiting the entire community. See you September 19!
Trinity Theatre Company is located at 2525 El Camino Real #173 at The Shoppes of Carlsbad
