Richard Cravatts, Brandeis Center board member and SDJW contributor

July 1, 2026
Richard L. Cravatts

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release) – The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law mourns the passing of board member Dr. Richard Cravatts, a distinguished scholar, educator, and long-time advocate against anti-Semitism. Brandeis Center Chairman and CEO Kenneth L. Marcus issued the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and esteemed board member, Dr. Richard Cravatts,  who devoted his life to confronting antisemitism with moral clarity, intellectual rigor, and courage. For decades, Richard educated, wrote, and spoke with remarkable conviction and integrity. His advocacy helped shape the modern fight against antisemitism and inspired countless others to stand up for truth in the face of hostility.

“Richard was far more than a valued member of our Board. He was a trusted adviser, a thoughtful colleague, and a dear friend. His wisdom, generosity, good humor, and unwavering commitment to justice strengthened the Brandeis Center and left an indelible mark on our mission. His contributions to our work and to the broader effort to combat antisemitism and defend civil rights will continue to guide us. We extend our deepest condolences to Richard’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. May his memory be for a blessing.”

In addition to his service on the Brandeis Center board of directors, Cravatts was president emeritus of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East.  In the latter capacity he authored many columns that were picked up by San Diego Jewish World.  This publication salutes his memory!
