California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday was congratulated by AMCHA Initiative’s director Tammi Rossman-Benjamin for vetoing AB 2551, a bill that would establish a separate process for students to challenge adverse regulations about time, place and manner of protests.
Although phrased neutrally, the measure sponsored by the California Faculty Association was thought to be aimed at anti-Israel protests in particular.
AMCHA warned that singling out protest-related discipline and creating a special venue devoted to challenging protest rules would create an ongoing mechanism for political pressure on universities’ enforcement of protections adopted after campus protests repeatedly crossed from protected expression into harassment, intimidation, obstruction and disruption.
