Investigators of the Department of Homeland Security (HSI) raided the Washington D,C. home of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), a frequent critic of President Trump, and vice versa, in the predawn hours of Monday, Oct. 12.
Trump told reporters that the HSI raid was independent of him. ” “I think she’s a terrible person, just a complainer. She comes from a country (Somalia) that is a non-country, and then she comes over here, and she complains about our constitution. I think she’s a terrible person, but that’s really up to the DOJ.”
The Department of Justice confirmed that the search was done with judicial concurrence. It was part of a continuing criminal probe focusing on possible fraud committed by Omar’s late father when the family immigrated to the U.S. The congresswoman was just a girl at the time.
Omar said the raid was an escalation of the administration’s vendetta against her. She is running for another term at the beginning of next month, Nov. 3. The Justice Department typically refrains from any overt action against a target of a criminal investigation within two months of an election. How this development will sit with the voters is anyone’s guess.
Omar wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“I’m ok, Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
