POWAY, California (Press Release) — Ner Tamid Synagogue and Kol Tefillah announce an in-person musical Shabbaton starring Yoel Sykes, a spiritual facilitator who co-creates intentional community through music and prayer. The event takes place Friday and Saturday, November 13th and 14th.
The community is invited to dinner on the 13th with Sykes (see cost below) at 5:45, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat services at 7pm. On the 14th, he will lead the community in Havdalah and a concert at 7pm (see cost below). Both events take place at Ner Tamid Synagogue in Poway.
Born and raised in Jerusalem, Yoel Sykes has composed many beautiful melodies for Jewish prayer that are used around the world. He co-founded the musical group Nava Tehila in Jerusalem. Sykes studied music at the Center for Eastern Music in Jerusalem and flamenco guitar in the Fundacion de Christina Heeren school of Flamenco Arts in Seville, Spain. Now living in Boulder, Colorado, Sykes travels to synagogues around the world to lead transformative prayer experiences, with the intention of creating space for people to return home into their hearts and to expand into the spaciousness of the soul, into community and into the infinite oneness within and beyond.
“I love singing and praying together in community,” says Sykes. “It’s something meaningful I can offer to the world, to help bring a little bit of joy and co-create a sense of belonging and spiritual connection.” Says Jessie Birnbaum, Director of Education and Youth Engagement at Ner Tamid, “I have always found that the addition of music to a religious experience can elevate that experience in a deep profound manner. Bringing Yoel to Ner Tamid will help bring that amazing connection and deep feeling to our community.”
The cost for dinner on Friday night is $30 per person. There is no charge for Kabbalat Shabbat services. Cost for Havdalah and concert is $25 per person, $18 per person up to 25 years old. Registration is required for all events. To register, visit: nertamidsd.org.
To complete the weekend, there will be a creative Shabbat morning service at 10 am at Ner Tamid followed by a kiddush lunch which is free of charge.
