Wednesday, January 4; 1 – 3 pm
Computer Class: Meet the Computer Never tried a computer before or very new with them? Wondering what they’re all about? Meet the Computer is a great starter class to help you become familiar with the computer in an easy going, comfortable class style. This hands-on class will acquaint first timers, beginners or those just needing a refresher, with computers. Class Fee: $5 for members; $8 for non-members.

Get Involved: Advocacy for Seniors

Who says that you can’t change things? As seniors, sometimes we may not feel like we have the power to change things. Join Christina, as she shows us how we can become involved with advocacy efforts in advocating for important issues that will raise the awareness of critical issues among legislators, service providers and community members thereby leading to increased funding for programs.
Monday, January 9, 12:45 p.m. — The College Avenue Center offers the popular and fun PositScience, Brain Fitness program starting in January, for the Winter session of 14 weeks. Do you have senior moments, missing conversations, concerned about vision and driving? Students will be challenged with memory simulations that will actually help to reshape your brain. Results can include better vision and memory skills. An orientation will be held today for newcomers to the program. Classes begin January 23 Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday mornings, through April. Session fee is free for members, $10 for non-members (with refundable $25 deposit).

Computer Class – Keeping Your Email Organized: You have email now, but your Inbox is getting messy. How do you clear up the clutter? This easy class will help keep your email organized so you don’t miss important emails from family and friends. And how do you deal with all that annoying junk mail you’re receiving and how do you stop receiving it? Learn helpful email skills, including how to use your email address book and junk mail filters. Class Fee: $5 for members; $8 for non-members.

Computer Class – Me, My Family and I: An Introduction to Genealogy: Genealogy can be fun and rewarding. But there’s so much information on the Internet that you may be asking, “Where do I begin?” and “What will work for me?” This course is designed as an introduction to online genealogy to help you learn vocabulary, get organized and begin to sort through all the possibilities. (Students will need to have some basic computer knowledge for this class) Class Fee: $5 for members; $8 for non-members.

Avoid Scams/Fraud- How to Protect Yourself
With Katie Wilson, Victim’s Advocate with the Diego District Attorney’s Office. In a world where information can be accessed at a touch of a button, we must protect our identity and not fall prey to fraudulent phone calls. In San Diego County and all over the nation, this is a problem that is becoming more prevalent every year. Katie will give us helpful information to keep us safe from identity theft, fraud, and other scams.

How the Brain Changes with Age
With Dr. Lisa Eyler, from the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, will take us on a fascinating journey through the human brain of an older adult. Dr. Eyler received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, she is a faculty member in a joint doctoral program with SDSU/UCSD program in Clinical Psychology with the Stein Institute for Research on Aging. Her focus of study and research is in understanding the individual’s differences in cognitive and emotional functioning through brain imaging.
