SAN DIEGO — The first time I ever attended a Healing Circle was last month. Not generally drawn to such “touchy-feely” experiences, I was definitely skeptical. I had attended all the planning meetings and knew exactly what was going to happen. I was confident it would be a wonderful experience for those people who were RSVPing, but not for someone “like me.”
I arrived early to review the set-up, welcome attendees, and provide assistance to Rabbi Yael Ridberg and Steve Alper, LCSW, our facilitators. Once a critical mass was in the room, Rabbi Ridberg started drumming, singing, and setting the tone. The next 60 minutes were a beautifully crafted combination of words, silence, private thoughts, elevating names, flowing water, opening hearts, music, connection, and community.
The longer I have reflected on the experience, the more powerful it has become. It was not just about those in my life who are ill. It was a space and time for me to be present in the moment, open myself up to what happens around me, and reflect on how I am in the world. It was not about curing those I love, but about accepting and finding peace. As participants were leaving they stated that they were feeling “calm,” “peaceful,” and “at ease.” Surprisingly, I was too.
Needless to say, I am looking forward to the Healing Circle this Sunday, December 11 at 7:30 pm in the Astor Library at the JCC. Rabbi Lenore Bohm and Steve Alper, LCSW, will be our facilitators. I invite you to join me, even if this is not “your thing.” You will be happy you did.
L’refuat ha’nefesh–to healing of the spirit,
