A Passover welcome for a Marine away from home

Congregation B'nai Tikvah Past President Col. Mark Haiman USMC, (Ret). Sisterhood President Honey Haskell, Corp Samuel Roochnik USMC

VISTA, California (Press Release) — A capacity crowd attended Congregation  B’nai Tikvah’s annual, “2nd Night Seder” Saturday evening, April 7. Congregation  B’nai Tikvah was honored to host a very special guest, Corporal Samuel Roochnik from Bethesda, MD,  who is currently  stationed at Camp Pendleton Marine Base. The seder, officiated by B’nai Tikvahs’ Rabbi Ben Leinow was “lively, entertaining and spiritually moving,” according to Cantor Larry Kornit.  The seder was catered with a  delicious kosher meal from Charles Rubin and Schmoozers.

Roochnik’s family, worried that the Marine corporal had no place to go for seder, had contacted San Diego Jewish World to inquire about a seder he might attend.  One of the closest synagogues to Camp Pendleton, Congregation B’nai Tikvah, immediately responded with an invitation.  Commented Cantor Kornit:  “I think the important part is that you were reached out to  and as a community we and specifically B’nai Tikvah of Vista, met  the challenge.  Our culture and our faith transcends time and  distance so that even when we are far from home, our spiritual home is truly not that far away. ”
