Supreme Court favors corporate privacy over people’s

By Congresswoman Susan Davis

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last time I checked the constitution, it began with “We the People”.

Lately, it seems as if the Supreme Court would prefer that it begin “We the Corporations”.

I am deeply disappointed that Monday the Supreme Court turned a deaf ear to Montana’s plea for keeping coporate interests from dominating their elections and corruption from polluting their government.

Instead, this Supreme Court has continued protecting the largest corporations at the expense of actual living, breathing Americans.

In Citizen’s United, the court somehow decided that corporations have the same rights as people….and then on Monday the court actually decided that corporations matter MORE than people.

In Arizona, it told us people have to “show papers” to prove who they are.  But in Montana, it told us corporations running political ads don’t have to show the voters anything to say who they are.

Now, the floodgates are open.

This ruling was the court’s last chance before November’s election to prevent corporations from spending millions upon millions of undisclosed dollars to influence our government from the shadows.

It’s just not right.

Now, I need to ask for voters’ help, so that I can prepare for the onslaught of potential attacks by those corporations or wealthy individuals who might seek to influence our race because we have stood up to them.

I have been outspoken in my support of campaign finance reform – and the rights of ordinary people.  Because of this, I need to be prepared to fight.

I hope voters will consider supporting my campaign today.  Our hope is to secure as many grassroots contributions as possible, to counter the influence of the SuperPACs that may enter the race.

People have always made the difference in our campaign, and this year is no exception.  I know with the voters’ help and support – we can do this!
