SAN DIEGO — The recent congressional fundraising party at the home of Irwin and Joan Jacobs at which President Barack Obama was the featured speaker is still the subject of column items for the U-T’s Diane Bell. In the Tuesday, May 13, edition, she reports on a conversation between the President and San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, who is an alumna and huge fan of Ohio State University sports. She told the President how sorry she was that Ohio State—which he had picked to beat Dayton in the runup to the NCAA basketball championship—had been his bracket buster. And he congratulated her on being the first female police chief in San Diego’s history. He knows something about historic firsts.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has decided against filing charges against San Diego Police Officer Gilbert Lorenzo, who was twice arrested in La Mesa for allegedly battering his wife, and suspended by Chief Zimmerman from the San Diego Police Department without pay after the first arrest. The U-T’s Lyndsay Winkley reported that Dumanis’s spokeswoman Tanya Sierra said her boss thought there was insufficient evidence to prove a case against Lorenzo.

The San Diego City Council voted unanimously to allocate $3.2 million for holiday pay for police officers, part of an effort to retain officers who are paid less than those in many other municipalities. Besides that, commented City Councilwoman Marti Emerald, in a U-T story by David Garrick, the officers deserve the bonus pay because they miss being together with their families on those holidays.
