SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — Nobel Prize laureate Gerald Edelman has died at age 84, reports the U-T’s Bradley Fikes. Edelman, who died in La Jolla on Sunday, was director of the Neurosciences Institute as well as a professor of neurobiology at the Scripps Research Institute. Robert Porter and he shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for their study of antibodies. The scientist was a lover of the arts, often hosting concerts and lectures at the Neuroscience Institute’s auditorium.

Murdered San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk had a stamp issued for him in Washington, while members and supporters of the LGBT community in San Diego held a Harvey Milk breakfast Thursday, May 22, at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. Diane Bell notes in her U-T column that San Diego was the first city to name a street after Milk, and there is also a memorial bench in Balboa Park for him.

IN MEMORIAM–Suzy Penner (08/12/1936–05/10/2014), a longtime kindergarten teacher and wife of former San Diego Port Commissioner Bob Penner, was memorialized in a sponsored announcement in the U-T. According to the notice, “Suzy and Bob travelled the world and entertained frequently at their home in Chula Vista. Favorite activities included theater, Las Primeras, book clubs and tennis. Suzy excelled at flower arranging, gin rummy, and laughing at her husband’s jokes. She was the daughter of Baptist minister Paul Allen of Chicago, and Lucille Meyer Allen.
