
SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — Philanthropist Jerome Katzin has died, the Jewish Federation of San Diego announced Saturday, June 14. Katzin’s private burial on June 16 will come just 10 days after his wife Miriam was laid to rest.
The parents of David and Daniel Katzin and Diane Katzin Kurnit will be memorialized in a public ceremony a day later, at 11 a.m., June 17, at Congregation Beth El in La Jolla.
The Katzin family said anyone wishing to make donations in their parents’ honor should make them to the Seacrest Foundation’s Fund for Charitable Care at the Katzin Residence (Alzheimer’s Unit)
Michael Sonduck, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of San Diego, said “Jerry and Miriam were both longstanding members of our San Diego Jewish Community and extraordinarily generous supporters of many, many causes. We will be eternally grateful to them for their friendship and support. All of us at the Jewish Federation join in offering our most sincere condolences to the family.”
Marjory Kaplan, President of the Jewish Community Foundation said that as ” former Chair of the Board of the Jewish Community Foundation, Jerry was one of our most esteemed and valued leaders. With his wife, Miriam z’l, he named the Presidential Chair that I currently hold. His guidance and generosity have had a profound impact on many organizations and individuals in our community. ”
Kaplan also noted that gifts in his honor to the Seacrest Foundation “will be added to a fund that Miriam and Jerome established for charitable care at the Katizin Residence which is the Alzheimers unit at Seacrest.”
“Jerry leaves a powerful legacy of leadership and philanthropy in both the Jewish and secular world,” she said.
