Nine Jews to serve in state Legislature

Flag_of_California.svgSAN DIEGO (SDJW) — State Sen. Marty Block’s office reports that after last Tuesday’s elections, the Jewish Caucus in the State Legislature will have nime members, one short of a minyan. All nine members are Democrats.

Two members of the current Legislature–former Senate President pro tempore Darrell Steinberg and Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal– were required not to run again because of term limits. One incumbent assemblyman, Steve Fox, lost his bid for reelection.

Those three departing members were replaced by three new state senators, one of whom is the former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg. The others are Ben Allen and Jeff Stone.

Altogether there are seven Jewish state senators: Block, who chairs the Jewish Caucus; Hannah Beth Jackson, Mark Leno, Lois Wolk and the three senators-elect.

There are now two Jewish members of the Assembly: Richard Bloom and Marc Levine, the latter of whom serves as the vice chairman of the Jewish Caucus.
