LA JOLLA, California — Three mothers will be reading the poetry of their daughters at the final evening of Jewish Poets—Jewish Voices, “From Generation to Generation,” Tuesday evening, May 12, at 7 p.m.. at the Astor Library in the Lawrence Family JCC.
Actually, my daughter, Harriet Wingard, will be flying in from Portland, where she teaches fifth grade at the Portland Jewish Academy, to read her own poetry. Harriet, a graduate of Amherst College with an M.A. in education from UCLA, specializes in the teaching of creative writing at the Portland Jewish Academy. I will be reading only one of her selections.
Bryna Weiss, the outstanding actress of theater, film and TV, who lived in San Diego prior to moving to Los Angeles, will be here to read the works of her daughter, Valerie Weiss, who graduated from Loyola Law School, and is currently an Associate at a New York law firm. Valerie has produced and performed in a Poetry Documentary in the New York International Film Festival. Her poetry has also been performed at The Playhouse in Buffalo, New York in a Series: Women on Men.
Retired attorney and poet, Suzy Finkelstein, will be reading the poetry of her daughter, Jaime Lynn Finkelstein, a children’s counselor in Denver, who received her BA from the University of Colorado and her MA from Naropa in Transpersonal Counselling. Jaime is a survivor of a catastrophic brain injury. The poetry which will be read dates back to the time when she was a young teenager.
Following the readings of the featured poets, there will be a half hour of open microphone. Audience members are invited to share their poetry.
This is one of the programs offered at no charge by the Astor Judaica Library.
