SAN DIEGO (Times of San Diego) –The Navy has accepted delivery of the future USS Gabrielle Giffords, the latest littoral combat ship headed for San Diego

It’s the ninth of the agile, multi-role ships delivered to the Navy and the fifth of the trimaran-hull, Independence variant to join the fleet.

“Gabrielle Giffords will join her sister littoral combat ships in their homeport of San Diego in 2017, commencing testing and training for deployed operations upon arrival,” said Capt. Harrison, commander, LCS Squadron 1.

The ship is named for the former Arizona Congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt in 2012 that left her with a severe brain injury.

The delivery last Friday marks the official transfer from the shipbuilder, Austal USA in Alabama, to the Navy.

Already homeported in San Diego are the littoral combat ships USS Freedom, USS Independence USS Fort Worth, USS Coronado, USS Jackson and USS Montgomery.

  1. Very few Navy ships have been named for Jews over the years. As a Jewish publication we take pride when members of our community receive national honors!
