Hillel promotes Michael Rabkin, Rabbi David Singer

SAN DIEGO (Press Release) – The Hillel of San Diego Board of Directors has named Rabbi David Singer Acting Executive Director of Hillel of San Diego, effective July 1, 2017. Hillel of San Diego’s current Executive Director Michael Rabkin has been named to a key new position with Hillel International as a Campus Support Director.

In his new role, based in San Diego, Rabkin will work with a cohort of Hillels, including Hillel of San Diego, to achieve high standards of excellence. Rabkin will collaborate with local Hillel directors to build thriving campus environments, as well as foster workplaces that recruit, grow and retain top talent.

“Over the last five years, under Michael Rabkin’s exceptional leadership, Hillel of San Diego has impacted the lives of thousands of Jewish students, and has built and opened the gorgeous new Melvin Garb Hillel Center at San Diego State University,” said David Michan, president of Hillel of San Diego. “Hillel of San Diego is fortunate that we will continue to work closely with Michael in his new role.”

In two years at the helm of UC San Diego Hillel, Singer has overseen dramatic growth in Hillel’s reach and impact, sparking a renaissance in Jewish student life on campus. Triton Jewish Leaders, an innovative leadership incubator at the core of Hillel’s methodology, mobilizes 50 student leaders each year through individualized mentorship empowering them as catalysts of change across the university. Singer manages the effort to build the Beverly and Joseph Glickman Hillel Center, which was recently approved by the San Diego Planning Commission. In recognition of Singer’s successes, he was also promoted from Director to Executive Director of Hillel at UC San Diego.

A La Jolla native, Singer was ordained at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies. He graduated from UC Berkeley where he served as President of the Jewish Student Union and Berkeley Hillel. Previously, Singer served as a rabbi at a congregation in Dallas, Texas.

“We are thrilled to have David’s passionate leadership at UC San Diego Hillel,” said Emily Jennewein, Hillel of San Diego’s incoming president. “We are fortunate to have him step into the interim role of Executive Director with Michael Rabkin’s continued support and mentorship.”

Hillel of San Diego’s Board of Directors has also initiated a Task Force for Excellence to study the efficacy of the organization’s current regional structure and make recommendations to optimize resources that support thriving Jewish life on campus.
