Story Book Interprets the Jonah Tale for Children

In Stein’s version of the story, illustrated by Sabina Hahn, Jonah is a teacher, whose class of elementary school students meets under a tree.  He told the children stories, brought them snacks of figs and raisins, and gently reproved naughty behavior.  He was such a good teacher that God decided he would be ideal for teaching the people of Nineveh {Mosul, in modern-day Iraq) that they must change their evil ways. A Journal to Prompt Children to Express Themselves

Here is a journal encouraging children between the ages of 7 and 13 to read, think, and write about everyday secular and Jewish topics.  Because it will encourage their children’s self-expression, parents may find this an ideal gift for one of the days of Chanukah. [Donald H. Harrison]

The Self-Deceptions of a Drug Addict and Her Enabling Aunt

This memoir is about different kinds of self-deception.  One form is that of a drug addict who keeps telling herself and others that she is on the road to recovery and doesn’t need any 12-step programs or psychological help.  The other is about a well-meaning aunt, who enables her drug-addict niece by pretending not to know that she is still using. Overcoming Obstacles to Honor a Father

From the time she was a child, author Sarah Birnbach always went to her father Marvin for comfort.  Her strained relationship with her mother permitted no such interaction.  When her father died, in some ways she felt like an orphan, even though her mother was still living.  There was no recognition on her mother’s part that Sarah was grieving too.  What would she know about loss, her mother would say, she wasn’t married for 54 years.
