SAN DIEGO (SDONA)–Mayor Kevin Faulconer, interviewed on CNN’s “State of the Union” show Sunday, said thwarting terrorists requires a partnership with law enforcement at the neighborhood level.

“The threat is constantly evolving, and you have to be ahead of it,” Faulconer told host Candy Crowley.

He said San Diego says ahead of the threat though a program  under which the Department of Homeland Security cross-trains police officers in anti-terrorism. He said San Diego has more than 100 cross-trained officers, enough to work every shift, every day.

Those officers, plus coordination at a neighborhood level, is key to keeping San Diego safe from terrorism, Faulconer said.

“It really comes down to that partnership…neighborhood by neighborhood. That’s something that every big city accross the country has found,” he said.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh were also interviewed on the program, which examined the safety of American cities as the anniversary of 9/11 nears.
