The $250 and over luncheon will be held on April 5 in the Franciscan Room of El Cortez Hotel. Mrs. Abe Ratner and Mrs. Nate Ratner are hostesses.

In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the Women’s Division, Mrs. A.P. Nasatir, with Cantors Joseph Cysner, Israel Dubner and Julian Miller, will present a narration written by her.

It is in keeping with the tenth anniversary theme that Mrs. Neumann will be honored as the first chairman of the Women’s Division, and Mrs. Moore honored as first hostess for its advance gifts luncheon.  Other charter members of the advance gifts group will also be honored. The Mesdames Ratner have announced that the décor for the luncheon will carry out the tenth anniversary motif.

Mrs. Henry Newman, of Kansas City, chairman of the National Women’s Division of the United Jewish Appeal will be the speaker. She recently returned from a tour of French Moroccan and Israel welfare institutions.  As a member of a special United Jewish Appeal fact-finding mission, she made a study “from the women’s point of view” of the problems affecting women and children whose welfare depends on th outcome of the combined Jeiwsh campaigns throughout the country.

Mrs. Roberts said, “As women we feel a special responsibility this year in view of the need for the United Jewish Appeal Special Survival Fund above and beyond our regular drive. With our “plus” giving we must come to the aid of our fellow Jews in Israel and help in the emigrations of those who must flee turbulent North Africa.”

Southwestern Jewish Press, March 30, 1956, Page 1

Your children who have the proud right to live as Jews, have never heard of the kind of poverty, persecution and fear which haunt Jewish children elsewhere throughout the world.

By filling a Youth aliyah book with $3.00 worth of American coins, your children will be sharing a great adventure with the children of Israel, in spite of the thousands of miles separating them.  Youth Aliyah has already brought tens of thousands of Jewish children to Israel from 72 lands and is daily brining more.

World Jewish Child’s Day will be celebrated in San Diego with Hadassah heading the celebration, Sunday, April 8, at 12:30 p.m.  in Temple Beth Israel’s Center.  A delectable hot lunch will be served to all children attending and the main feature of the afternoon will be a laugh-a0minute vaudeville show coordinated by one of San Diego’s leading entertainers.

Mrs. Julius Levin is General Chairman for this event and she has already issued a large amount of coin books which will be filled with nickels, dimes and quarters, all adding up to $3.00 which admits one chil. Admission without a book is $3.00 for a child and 50c for an adult.  This includes lunch.

Your children’s nickels and dimes will help to bring the homeless children of the world to Israel.  Celebrate World Jewish Child’s Day with Hadassah on Sunday, April 8, at Temple Center.

Community Gets Set for “Kick Off” Dinner Apr. 8
Southwestern Jewish Press, March 30, 1956, Pages 1, 10

The San Diego United Jewish Fund officially opens its 1956 campaign with a Kick-Off Dinner to be held Sunday, April 8 in the Continental Room of the San Diego Hotel, according to Milton Roberts, general chairman of the drive .  Rabbi Israel Chodos of Temple Sinai in Los Angeles will be the speaker, and Harpo Marx and his Las Vegas show will entertain.

Roberts said, “Considering the results of the Pace-Setter Division to date, we expect the campaign to reach at least $120,00 at the conclusion of the Kick-Off Dinner.”

At the Pace-Setter Division dinner held last Sunday at which 150 leaders and their wives heard U.S. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota speak on behalf of the campaign, $85,000 was raised. This represents the largest amount raised at this stage of the campaign since 1948.  The drive is proceeding at a much speedier pace than in previous years and is 33% ahead of the 1955 campaign at a comparable date.

Senator Humphrey stated that the United States must sell defensive arms to Israel and the United States must sign a mutual security pact with Israel.  He called Israel “one of the greatest inspirational experiments of the 20th century.”  He said, “It was your government, fellow Americans, who first recognized the State of Israel. We were her original sponsors, into the United Nations,  and, as Americans, we have a moral and political investment in Israwel.”

He further stated that he was not pro=Israel nr anti-Arab, but it was his belief that any democracy fighting for existence should be assisted.

He continued, “Make no mistake, the Jewish people living in North Africa are going to be driven from their homes. They need a place to live, a place not to be afraid. Is it any wonder they look to Israel as a haven?”

Two outstanding Jewish leaders were honored at the meeting for service to the Jewish community.  Murray D. Goodrich received a plaque from the State of Israel Bond Organization for outstanding leadership in the Bonds campaign. Harry Snyder, who retired after three years as treasurer of the United Jewish Fund, was presented a plaque in token of appreciation for services he has rendered the Jewish community.

The sermon will show the relationship between the Passover story and the present day crisis in Israel.
