‘Oldest living author’ to speak at San Diego library branch

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)– The North University Community Branch Library, a Branch of the San Diego Public Library, will present the popular local author, Laura Simon (age 106), who will discuss her book and life on Friday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m.  The presentation will also include the screening of a twelve-minute documentary about her life, Laura Simon: Making Her Mark.

Born in Chicago in 1905, Laura Simon is a first-generation working class Jewish-American woman. She began work on her book at age 92. Legally blind, Simon’s book was written via dictation, a process which took many years. In October 2011, I Am Still Here was added to the collection of the Library of Congress, which earned Simon the honor of being the oldest living author to have a book in the Library of Congress. Simon is an artist, as well as an author, with one of her paintings gracing the cover of her book.

I Am Still Here consists of a series of historical vignettes which span ten decades of history. The book opens “The Titanic: April 14, 1912” and closes with the Simon’s 100th birthday party, “The Centennial Celebration: November 26, 2005”. The 100th birthday celebration was captured in the video documentary, Laura Simon: Making Her Mark, which will be shown during the author talk.

Copies of I Am Still Here will be available for purchase and personal signing by the author. Ten percent of the proceeds will be given to the North University Community Branch Library to help to fund library programs like this one.
