CARLSBAD, California (Press Release) — In a most unusual combination, distinguished Rabbi Hillel Silverman will officiate at High Holiday services with his Cantor Grandson Matthew Rutta in Carlsbad, California. To enhance the generational ties, the Machzor Prayer book being used was edited by the Rabbi’s well known father, Rabbi Morris Silverman, who achieved national prominence with scores of liturgical publications.
Rabbi Hillel Silverman, now retired and part time Rabbi at B’nai Shalom in Vista, served for over 50 years in major synagogues in Los Angeles, Dallas and Greenwich, CT. He is a graduate of Yale and ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary where he also received a Ph.D. in Bible. Silverman served as a chaplain in the Navy and the Marines during the Korean War. An author of 12 books, Dr. Silverman served on the Boards of many local and international organizations. He was chairman of the National Rabbinic cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal and has traveled extensively through the world, including 31 trips to Israel.
A sought out lecturer, Rabbi Silverman has received numerous awards and honors. Prime Minister Menachem Begin presented Silverman with the Prime Minister’s Israel Medal of Honor for his distinguished service to Israel and the Jewish people.
His grandson, Matthew Rutta, who will be officiating with him, is a native of Los Angeles and is a graduate of the Joint Program of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and is a fifth year rabbinical student at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University. He is also receiving a Master’s degree in education from the American Jewish University. Matthew Rutta has officiated for four years at synagogues in Los Angeles.
