Pioneer Women Note Israel’s Anniversary

On Sunday, January 26, at 6 p.m. at the Beth Jacob Center, 4473 30th St., the Pioneer Women, Negba Club, are having a celebration for the 10th anniversary of the State of Israel. A delicious chicken dinner will be served by hostesses, Mmes. J. Blumfield, B. Friedman, B. Leavin, G. Kitaen, B. Plotnick, R. Leaf, R. Weitsman, A Friedman, R. Garber, T. Adams and N. Shaffer.

Featured guest speaker will be Mrs. M. Nichaelson, Pioneer Women Council President, of Los Angeles Dances will be performed by Mr. Balais, international folk dancer, with the Cottage of Israel Dance Group.  Mr. M Sheinberg, from Los Angeles, will entertain with his concertina, and Miss Sonia Weitzman with a splendid repertoire of Israeli songs.

Young Leaders Elect Officers – Hear Dr. Fredrich Fried Speak

Going into its fourth year of training young men for community leadership the Community Services Organization elected Robert Shapiro, President; Larry Lawrence, Vice-President, and Allen Raffe, treasurer.

Opening its new year of activities the membership heard Dr. Fredrich Fried of New York discuss Jewish immigration. Dr. Fried is the Field Director of the United Hias Service International Jewish Migration Agency.

Harvey Shecter of the Southern California ADL office, discussed “Prejudice and Discrimination” at the previous meeting.

Membership has been opened again to young men in business or professions, Shapiro said.  He appointed Manny Savitch as membership chairman and Dr. Gerald Kobernick, orientation chairman.

Cottage of Israel

The Cottage of Israel has opened its annual drive for new members. A most attractive brochure has been printed which will be sent to prospective members to acquaint them with the House of Pacific Relations of which the Cottage of Israel is a member Cottage.

Anyone interested in receiving this brochure may call Mrs. Alwin Feiler, AT-2-6256 and she will be happy to mail a copy.

On January 25, the House of Pacific Relations will hold its annual installation at the House of Pacific Relations. There will be a social hour at 6, dinner at 7, and the installation will be followed by a brief program and dancing. For tickets, please contact Mrs. Seymour Gates, JU-2-1450.

Council Women Hear Employment Experts

Job opportunities for senior citizens will be discussed Tuesday, January 28, 1 p.m.. at the Jewish Community Center, 4056 University Ave.  Sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, the meeting, open to the public, will feature Miss Odessa Dubinsky.

Miss Dubinsky, Area Labor Market Analyst for the State Department of Employment, is well qualified to discuss employment problems as faced by the older segment of the population, according to Mrs. Herbert Malley, General Chairman.

MR. William R. McSpadden, Field Representative for the Social Security Administration, will also speak.  He will disclose new laws affecting social security.

Mrs. Fritz Lavender is acting as telephone chairman for the meeting, while MRs. Lester Tokars is in charge of refreshments. Mrs. Herbert Reder is Vice President in charge of the activity.

Henry Weinberger Lodge B’nai B’rith will hold its annual Installation Dinner-Dance at the San Diego Hotel on the evening of January 28th.

Marshall Zucker, Committee Chairman, reports that the cocktail hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner (steak or fish) served at 6:30 p.m. and the installation will start promptly at 8:00 p.m.  Dancing, to the music of Earl Fisher, will commence at 9:00 p.m.

Dinner reservations may be made by phoning Cypress 6-6297.  Members or guests who are unable to attend the dinner are welcome to witness the installation ceremony and join in the dancing free of charge.

Officers to be installed are President, Sam Bennett; 1st Vice President, Marshall Zucker; 2nd Vice President, Louis Levitt; 3rd Vice President, Howard Harris; Treasurer, Joseph Feldman; Financial Secretary, Lawrence Rubenstein; Recording Secretary, Irwin Gostin; Warden, Hebert Solomon, and Guardian, Dr. Seymour Okmin. Trustees will be Joe Goldberg, Al Kay, Arthur Levy, Alfred Perper, Sid Rose and Morris Wax.

Milton Fredman, P.P. will be installed as Grand Lodge President’s Representative and Eddie Breitbard, P.P., as Grand Lodge Executive Board Representative.

M.C. Marshall Zucker will be aided by Installation Officials Eddie Breitbard, P.P.; Morrie Kraus, P.P., and Jerry Freedman, P.P., and by Chefs d’ Meetings Jeremiah ARonoff and Joe Goldberg who will manage the refreshments.

Mr. Robert Friedman, Chairman, announces that the lucky couple will receive a complete wardrobe for two to take along on their trip.  Merchandise has been donated by thirty San Diego merchants and includes a wide selection of items.

Hadassah Presents Debs at Ball Mar. 8

Pink cupids amid shocking pink sweet peas underneath nose gays held by gold cords were the floral setting for the debutante tea, held on Saturday, January 18, at the home of Mrs. David Starr. Mrs. Robert Strauss, chairman of the Debutante Committee and Mrs. David Starr, co-chairman, held their tea in conjunction with Mrs. Elmer Wohl, chairman of the pre-debutantes, and Mrs. Joseph Kwint, her co-chairman. The two teas were held on January 18 which was designated as Debutante Day.  At these teas the girls were prepared for their forthcoming debut at Hadassah’s celebrated Presentation Ball to be held on March 8th in the Caribbean Room of the El Cortez Hotel. This is to be Hadassah’s Third Annual Presentation Ball.

The Debutantes are sixteen years old or a Junior in high school and are to be attended by the pre-debutantes, who are fifteen years old or sophomores in high school.  Arrangements are now being organized for the festive occasion.

The Mother’s Tea was held on January 13, at the home of Mrs. David Starr, to acquaint the mothers with the details of procedure.

The proceeds from the Ball will go to Hadassah’s medical organization projects in Israel.

Officers of the Heartland Jewish Community Organization’s newly formed Sisterhood are Mmes. Alfred Hyland, Pres.; Ruben Olsher, 1st V.P.; Robert Silverman, 2nd V.P.; Marshall Persky, Corr. Sec.; Carl Naliboff, Rec. Sec., and Richard Rakow, Treas.

The Sisterhood will hostess the Oneg Shabbat following the first Friday night services of the Heartland Jewish Community Organization.  All are invited to attend the service which will be held at the Home Federal Savings Loan Assn., Bldg in El Cajon, on Friday, January 31, at 8 p.m.

At the last AZA meeting Dr. Daniel Harris, Ph.D., spoke to the chapter about vocational guidance. Dr. Harris, a psychologist in private practice, answered questions.

The chapter is glad to welcome two new advisors.  Herb Burkin and Morris Slayen will help Abe Eldex and Dr. Milton Millman in advising the boys. Mr. Burkin is a former AZA’er and is very active in B’nai B’rith. Mr. Slayen is a former Aleph Godol (president) and has done extensive work with teenagers.

The next AZA meeting will be Sunday, January 26, at the Jewish Community Center, Central and University, at 1:00.  Movies about AZA and of general interest will be shown.
