  1. The above story made me laugh. It also brought back childhood memories of Eddie Cantor. Mr. Cantor looked so much like my Portuguese grandfather and I idolized Mr. Cantor who was my favorite actor. I so loved movie magazines and found out Mr. Cantor and I shared the same birthday, January 31. I wrote a fan letter telling him how happy I was to share the same date, not to mention how sweet he was. Approximately three to four weeks later, I received a letter from Mr Cantor letting me know he was happy regarding our birthdays. Unfortunately, years later the letter was lost, but I never forgot his kindness to reply to a youngster. He was great!!!

  2. When my youngest sister (daughter #5) was born in 1956 in San Diego, to Harry and Phyllis Kanter, my dad wrote Hollywood star Eddie Cantor to say Eddie was no longer the only Jewish Cantor with 5 daughters. (Eddie’s 5 daughters are: Natalie Cantor Metzger, Marjorie Cantor, Marilyn Cantor Baker, Janet Cantor Gari and Edna Cantor McHugh.) Eddie Cantor’s reply was published in the San Diego Union-Tribune along with a photo of our family with the new baby. He had written, “If at first you don’t succeed, try try again!”
