CORRECTED: Rep. Peters Statement on Mass Shooting in Las Vegas
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) released the following statement on the shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada last night:
“Nearly 600 people killed or injured by just one man, in just ten minutes. These numbers are staggering, and they represent children, parents, friends, and neighbors who will never come home. They deserve to be known and mourned, and they and their families need our love and prayers.
Thank you to the brave first responders who ran into danger to help save lives—but up against ten or more rifles, including semi-automatic weapons, there was only so much they could do.
Congress, however, CAN do something: we can pass commonsense safety measures, like we have in California, to help lessen the chances of this happening again. Speaker Ryan has refused to let us vote yes or no on something as simple as a bipartisan bill to require universal background checks. On the contrary, Republican leadership had planned this week to let Congress consider a bill that would make it easier to purchase gun silencers without a background check.
We’ve sent letters, signed discharge petitions, honored gun violence victims on the House floor and met with activists at home, and I broadcast the 2016 sit-in to highlight the gun violence epidemic. We’ve done everything we can. It’s up to my Republican colleagues now to decide if they want to keep putting American lives in danger or if they are now, finally, ready to act. We can’t prevent every random act of violence, but if we could prevent just one, it would be worth it.
Mr. Speaker, I implore you, thoughts and prayers mean nothing unless they are followed by action. Let us debate gun safety and let us vote on common sense reform. And, no, it isn’t too soon to talk about this. It’s always too late.”
NEW YORK – World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder decried the “senseless” violence in Las Vegas today that left at least 58 dead and more than 500 injured at a country music festival.
“I am deeply saddened by this senseless attack, the deadliest shooting in our nation’s history,” said Lauder. “It is simply unconscionable that people anywhere going to enjoy a concert with family or friends should have to be in fear for their very lives. On behalf of world Jewry, I condemn this horrific criminal act. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families, and to all those who were wounded.”
Lauder also condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Marseille, France, and Edmonton, Canada. “We are horrified by the continued attacks on innocent civilians that threaten the fibre of our society,” Lauder said. “We extend our most heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims in Marseille, and wish the victims of the attack in Edmonton a speedy and full recovery.”

New York, NY, October 2, 2017 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) responded to the horrific and cowardly mass shooting at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip, an attack apparently carried out by a lone gunman who was reportedly armed with more than 10 high-power rifles. At least 50 people were killed and more than 500 wounded in the shooting, which is being called the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO and National Director, issued the following statement:
Last night, we witnessed yet another heinous mass shooting attack against innocent Americans who were targeted at random by an apparent lone gunman armed with an arsenal of automatic weapons. This is a tragic day for America, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
While we are still learning details and do not know the impetus for the killings, one thing is clear: the threat of mass violence against innocent civilians in America has not abated. This threat must be taken seriously.
Our Center on Extremism is investigating the killer’s background and activity and whether he may have ties to extremists or was motivated by any extremist ideology.
ADL’s Las Vegas regional office is in touch with local law enforcement and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.
Unfortunately, all too many times we have witnessed the tragic dangers guns in the hands of determined killers or domestic extremists present. Across the country in schools, businesses and houses of worship, individuals have used guns to terrorize communities and local institutions. We remember Orlando, Charleston and Newtown and other mass shootings. Just last week, a gunman opened fire at individuals attending church in Tennessee. We firmly believe that one way to limit the power of extremists and reduce violence in our communities is to enact tough, effective gun violence prevention measures.
