A few of Bern Schwartz’s works now at Museum of Photographic Arts

Donald H. Harrison

SAN DIEGO — The works of portrait photographer Bern Schwartz is the subject of a mini-exhibit through January 12 at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park.  Schwartz was known for engaging his subjects in conversation and taking photographs surreptitiously in an effort to capture their natural selves.  Among the portraits on exhibit at MOPA are those of Prince Charles  of Great Britain, David Hockney, Twiggy, and Zandra Rhodes.

His website showcases many other 1970s portraits with identifications by the positions the subjects held during that decade.  Of particular interest are the portraits of Jewish community members including  classical harmonica player Larry Adler , actress Claire Bloom, U.S. Congress Librarian Daniel Boorstin,  Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan,  former Israel Foreign Minister Abba Eban, Hebrew University President Avraham Harman; Technion President Amos Horev, Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovits; Israeli pediatrician Helena Kagan;  Israeli President Ephraim Katzir,  former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, violinist Yehudi Menuhin,  Israeli Defense Minister Shimon Peres,  Israeli Prime Miniser Yitzhak Rabin, polio vaccine discoverer Jonas Salk and artist Francoise Gilot, playwright Irwin Shaw,  historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., Hebrew University professor Gershom Scholem, disabled patients’ doctors and advocates Dr. Abraham Spighel and Dr. Maka Spighel, Israeli Supreme court Justice Yoel Sussman; Ben Gurion University President Joseph Tekoah; Massachusetts Institute of Technology president Jerome Weisner, Israeli archaeologist Yigael Yadin; and Knesset Speaker Yisrael Yeshayahu.

Political Dots and Dashes
Congresswoman Susan Davis reports that she and 213 House colleagues have called on U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “to bring the Senate into session to vote on gun violence prevention legislation.”  She wants the Senate to consider two pieces of legislation requiring background checks for gun purchasers …  Assemblywoman Shirley Weber has endorsed Georgette Gomez for the 53rd Congressional District seat from which Susan Davis retires at the end of her term. …  San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry is fascinated by the number three.  In an email fundraising appeal for her mayoral campaign, she asks for contributions of $3, $33, or $333, before September 30.  She says $3 helps volunteers knock on 3 doors; $33 puts up 3 yard signs; and $333 supports 3 phone banks. … Republican Assemblyman Brian W. Jones plans to challenge fellow Republican U.S Rep. Duncan Hunter in the 50th Congressional District.  With Hunter facing trial on charges of misusing campaign funds, the crowded field also includes radio host and former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio on the Republican side, and the Ammar Campa-Najjar, the Democrat who gave Hunter a close race in 2018 … San Diego City Councilman Chris Ward, who has drawn two Jewish opponents in the race for the 78th Assembly District – Sarah Davis and Micah Perlin – says he has a record in office that others can’t point to.  He cites the alternative energy plan to permit citizens to buy power from a joint powers agency rather than SDG&E, a proposal to divest city funds from the fossil fuel industry, tobacco industry, and private prison industry; and the renaming of part of Howard Avenue to honor LGBTQ+ trailblazer Jeri Dilno.

Cohn Group of Restaurants to temporarily manage four more eateries

David Cohn says the four Champion-Cain restaurants the Cohn Group of Restaurants has been asked to manage temporarily by a federal receiver probably were viewed as financially the strongest.  He told Lori Weisberg of the San Diego Union-Tribune: “In the end, the receiver has to liquidate the assets, so in the interim they needed someone to come in and operate these restaurants and asked us if we were willing to do it, and they selected these four” –Patio on Lamont, Saska’s, and a pair of Surfrider Restaurants in La Mesa and Pacific Beach.  “We think these are great brands, and some, like Saska’s, are a San Diego institution, and we would hate to see them close.  I can just assume you would keep the strongest open.”
