Carleigh Gold to exhibit works in resin

Bert Edelstein holds DVD of ‘The Ghost Army’ by Rick Beyer that aired on PBS

SAN DIEGO — Bertram Edelstein has learned that a ceremony has been tentatively scheduled March 21 on the floor of the House of Representatives to present a Congressional Gold Medal for the World War II military unit known as the Ghost Army.

During the campaign against Nazi Germany, soldiers in the Ghost unit would blow up inflatables made to look like tanks and other forms of transportation. At the same time, they would play amplified sounds of trucks and tanks moving, all in an effort to fool the enemy into thinking that the U.S. Army was maneuvering where it wasn’t.  The idea was to draw enemy troops away from what would become the real theatre of action

Edelstein’s father Philip had been a member of the 1,100-member unit that used deception and their wits to lure the Germans during World War II to concentrate their forces against U.S. opponents.

Edelstein said  to honor his father’s memory, he and his wife, Karen Helrich, plan to watch the ceremony.

Tifereth Israel Synagogue is exploring starting after-school Jewish programming for elementary school students in the San Carlos, Del Cerro, La Mesa, El Cajon and Santee areas.  “The program would provide transportation from school, healthy snacks, homework help, time to play, and meaningful fun, Jewish experiences geared to kids in kindergarten through fifth grade with flexible schedule options throughout the week.”  The synagogue’s survey to determine the needs of local families may be accessed here.

Carleigh Gold, who creates geode-inspired art works in resin, will be exhibiting her works Saturday, Jan. 13, and Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Siler Gallery, 7946 Ivanhoe Avenue, La Jolla.  A reception will be held from 4-7 p.m., on Saturday.

Gold said her resin artwork draws inspiration from geodes, “replicating the captivating play of colors and textures found in these natural wonders.”

Influenced by a geode’s mineral layers and crystalline structures, layers of resin combined with mica pigments and natural crystals achieve a spectrum of vibrant and iridescent tones, she said.

Gold invited viewers to come see her glossy, three-dimensional pieces that capture the essence of geodes.  “The beauty of geological formations can be appreciated through the medium of resin,” she said
