Howard Stern was born January 12, 1954 to Ben Stern and his wife Ray Schiffman in Queens, New York. Ray was a radio engineer at WHOM in Manhattan. In the family’s basement, Howard used to host make-believe radio shows.
At Boston University, he worked on campus radio station WTBU, and hosted a weekly comedy show titled “The King Schmaltz Bagel Hour,” that got cancelled following a racial sketch called “Godzilla Goes to Harlem.”
He worked for a series of radio stations, becoming known as a shock jock, which built ratings but worried broadcast executives. Over 20 years at WXRK in New York, his show was syndicated in 60 markets, and gained an audience of 20 million. He also interviewed celebrities on television, wrote a book Private Parts, and entered and later withdrew from a New York governor’s race as a Libertarian candidate.
Most recently, he has been hosting host shows on Sirius Radio.
