Our Shtetl San Diego County: Leaping Into Marriage?

January 18, 2024

San Diego County Assessor Jordan Marks

SAN DIEGO  (SDJW) — Have you ever met a couple who say, with a smile, that this is their tenth wedding anniversary, but in actuality have been married 40 years.  They are not lying, just bending the truth a little bit.  These are the couples who were married on February 29, which comes around only once in four years — the leap year..

Jordan Z. Marks, San Diego County’s assessor/ recorder/ county clerk, said Thursday, Jan. 18, that his office will “welcome walk-in weddings across San Diego for couples seeking to ‘take the leap'” and be married between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on this year’s Leap Day, which comes on a Thursday.  Or if you prefer, appointments for civil weddings or renewal of vows between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  may be made via this website at his offices in Chula Vista, San Diego, San Marcos, and Santee. Outdoor and indoor wedding venues are available.

Telling the stories of survivors of the Holocaust and of the Oct. 7 massacre in southern Israel is powerful and a necessity, according to the Brunch Club of the Women’s Philanthropy Board of the Jewish Federation of San Diego.  The brunch at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, at Farmer & the Seahorse, 10996 Torreyanna Road, San Diego,  will feature “If You Heard What I Heard,” a nonprofit organization focused on filming the stories of grandchildren of Holocaust survivors.  Speakers will include Carolyn Siegel, that organization’s executive director; Sonia Ancoli-Israel, who chaired the committee at Congregation Beth El in charge of creating its Holocaust memorial, and Heidi Gantwerk, the president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of San Diego  Tickets are $36 for those who register by Monday, Feb. 5.  Here is a link to the registration portal.

–OBITUARY NOTICES–

Barbara Marko,  mother of Rabbi Mathew Marko of Tifereth Israel Synagogue, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, in metropolitan New York, the congregation’s president Lisa Berman Hernandez announced.  The funeral at New Montefiore Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y., will be conducted on Friday, Jan. 18.  Rabbi Marko will spend part of the shiva week in New York and the rest of it back in San Diego with his friends and congregants.  Besides Rabbi Marko and his wife Marie, Barbara’s survivors include her son Eric Marko and daughter-in-law Lynn Marko; daughter Alyssa; sister Sharon Goldman, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  The family advises donations in her memory be made to Rabbi Marko’s Discretionary Fund or The Jewish Home Family of River Vale, New Jersey.

Larry Reisner, z”l

Laurence “Larry” Reisner, M.D. , 82, died Monday, Jan. 15, and was laid to rest at El Camino Memorial Park.  His family supplied this obituary notice to Am Israel Mortuary, which handled funeral arrangements. Reisner “was born to David and Sophie Reisner on February 25, 1941 in Bradford, Pennsylvania. The family moved to Pasadena, California in 1948 with his younger brother Michael Reisner. Larry’s mother Sophie, a concert pianist and piano teacher influenced Larry’s love of music. Larry went on to play the saxophone and clarinet continuing through his adult years. He and his fellow doctors formed a Big Band called the Biorhythms. Larry went on to become a physician doing his undergraduate work at UCLA and medical school at UCSF. He was one of seven people in the country to have accomplished a residency in obstetrics and anesthesiology . Larry was a full professor at UCSD who spoke around the country about techniques he developed in obstetric anesthesia. Larry’s passion for educating and learning led him to his career of 35 years as a practicing professor and medical practitioner. In addition to his passions in education, medicine, and music Larry was a car and auto enthusiast. His endeavors included car restoration, repair, and maintenance. Once retired from medicine, Larry went on to his other love which was law enforcement. Larry participated and ran the Encinitas Volunteer Sheriff Patrol. His hard work and dedication earned him the San Diego County Volunteer of the Year Award in 2011. Larry was a loving husband of 59 years to Susan Reisner and father of two children, Shauna and Aaron Reisner. Larry is survived by his wife Susan Reisner, brother Michael Reisner, his children Shauna and Aaron Reisner and his three grandchildren. Larry was loved by all and will be dearly missed.”
