LA JOLLA, California – Every other month, the Jewish Community Center (JCC) comes alive with the buzz of community, culture, and preparation for Shabbat at the Shabbat Market. This unique event offers a perfect blend of practicality and festivity, giving attendees the chance to shop for Shabbat essentials, connect with friends old and new, and immerse themselves in the warmth of local Jewish life.

Starting at 4 p.m. and wrapping up around sundown, the Shabbat Market creates a lively yet serene atmosphere. Picture a bustling marketplace where you can pick up freshly baked challah, indulge in delicious ready-to-eat foods from local vendors, and discover one-of-a-kind Judaica, jewelry, home goods, clothing, and sweets. It’s a space where practicality meets community, offering something special for everyone.

Israeli snacks

For me, visiting the Shabbat Market feels like a mini trip to Israel’s iconic shuk (marketplace). The diversity of vendors and items, combined with the sounds of different languages spoken around you, brings a piece of that vibrant culture to San Diego. Yet, at the core of this experience is a shared purpose—preparing for Shabbat while celebrating the unity of the community.

One of the highlights of the market is the free challah bake. Participants can braid their own challah and take it home to bake, ensuring the freshest and most personal addition to their Shabbat table. While parents shop and socialize, children can safely run and play in the enclosed area, making the market an enjoyable outing for families.

The Shabbat Market isn’t just about shopping—it’s about community support. Local vendors, many of whom are small businesses, use this platform to showcase their goods and try out new concepts. For some, it’s their first opportunity to connect with the community and share their creativity. By attending the market, you’re not only preparing for Shabbat but also helping local businesses thrive.

The Shabbat Market offers a space where people can meet new friends, reconnect with familiar faces, and strengthen the bonds that make our community unique. It’s a reminder of the richness of Jewish life and culture, right here in San Diego.

If you haven’t experienced the Shabbat Market yet, now’s the time to check it out. Come support local vendors, enjoy delicious food, and soak in the feeling of unity that defines this special event.  Sign up for the next market here.
