LA MESA, California—Lag B’Omer occurred on the 33rd day of counting the Omer, and many celebrated this occasion with bonfires and barbecue items like hot dogs, hamburgers, and s’mores.
With the “May Gray” that has not let up, I wondered if some of those bonfires were extinguished with the rain off and on.

Hillel of San Diego at UC San Diego reports it focused on education through comedy during the Peace in Israel Week happening. Chabad of University City reports the hiring of Assistant Rabbi Effy and Rebbetzin Doba Kahn who will be joining the congregation for Shavuot services and will offer classes and lectures throughout the holiday. Also, University City reports kicking off a 4-day fundraising campaign starting Sunday after Shavuot, to raise $120,000. Ner Tamid Synagogue reports that host families are needed to host its shinshin (High school graduate volunteers from Israel). Host families provide a private room in their home, food for daily meals, and a nurturing home environment for about 3-4 months. Each shinshin has an insured car, a cell phone, health insurance, and a financial stipend through the Jewish Agency for Israel. Click here if interested.

Vicky Cohen has died. She was the wife of Eddy Cohen, mother of Lina Galante, Beto (Margo) and David (Fredel) Cohen; grandmother of Eddy, Victoria and Jonathan Cohen, Grace Neuman, Vicky Sitton and Elias Cohen and Victoria, Camila and Abraham Cohen; and great grandmother of Eitan and Eddy Neuman. The funeral was held Thursday, May 15 at El Camino Memorial Park, Ohr Shalom Synagogue reports.

Sheldon Weissbuch, brother of Jeanne Gold, has died. Gold is the widow of Rabbi Aaron Gold, who served the Tifereth Israel Synagogue congregation for many years. The funeral and shiva were observed in Los Angeles, Tifereth Israel Synagogue reports.
