Time for a Declaration of Inner Independence

July 3, 2025

By Shayna Kaufmann

SAN DIEGO — July 4th doesn’t only have to be about fireworks and flags; it can be an invitation to claim a quieter kind of freedom, a personal declaration such as this:

I Declare my Inner Independence from:
–Roles I’ve outgrown
–Rules I never agreed to in the first place
–Relationships that bring me down
–Beliefs that tell me I’m not enough

This isn’t about politics or parades. It’s about personal liberation; the freedom to be fully, unapologetically your most authentic self.

This theme came up repeatedly at recent Embrace the Middle events, where women courageously shared the messages and patterns that have quietly limited their freedom. The stories were personal, heartfelt, and strikingly familiar:

🔹 A 47-year-old executive was told she was “too nice” to be a leader. (Patriarchy much?) At first, she tried to be tougher. But in time, her kindness shone through—along with her success and impact.
🔹 A vibrant 70-year-old released a belief from childhood: that you have to be good at everything you do. Now she’s trying new things for the sheer joy of it, with zero concern about performance.
🔹 A 57-year-old woman shared how she was taught to downplay her achievements so others wouldn’t feel bad. Half the room nodded in recognition. That belief had kept her small for decades.

These stories speak to a powerful truth: Many of us have internalized beliefs, often imposed by others, that quietly limit our freedom.

We rarely pause to ask: Is this belief even true? Do I agree with it?
Whose voice am I listening to—mine, or someone else’s?

Midlife is the Perfect Time to Ask:

  • Where do I still feel held back?
  • What beliefs no longer fit who I’ve become?
  • What kind of freedom do I long for now?

This July 4th, I invite you to write your own Declaration of Inner Independence, not from a country, but from the rules, roles, and narratives that no longer serve you.

Declare your freedom to:
✔️ Be unapologetically you
✔️ Rest without guilt
✔️ Live in alignment with your most authentic self
✔️ Try new things without needing to excel
✔️ Be successful without minimizing yourself
✔️ Lead with kindness and strength
✔️ Challenge the idea that it’s “too late” to make changes

Freedom isn’t only something we fight for out there. It’s something we reclaim inside. And midlife is the perfect time to set yourself free.

If you’re craving more clarity, confidence, or self-connection in this season of life, I’d love to support you.

✨ I offer private sessions, group experiences, and workshops for midlife women ready to unlearn what’s no longer serving them—and embrace what is.

Wishing you a safe, joyful, and liberating July 4th—and beyond. 💥
