SAN DIEGO – I have been covering the local Jewish community since 1986, first with the San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, then with the San Diego Jewish Times, and after economic considerations forced both of these newspapers to shut down, I started the online San Diego Jewish World in 2007. Most of the time I served as its editor and publisher, which I do now.
On August 7, I will celebrate my 80th birthday. I need a walker to get around so I can’t cover as many stories as I previously could. So, I’d like to take a less active role in San Diego’s only daily Jewish publication, which is sustained by some advertising and a loyal cadre of volunteers who contribute articles gratis.
In other words, I am looking for my replacement as publisher and editor, someone who is dedicated to covering San Diego’s Jewish community and building upon this publication’s record of presenting many points of view about the issues facing the Jewish community. My successor would have to be independently self-sufficient or a whiz at building up advertising because SDJW’s revenue cannot sustain a salary.
When my replacement is found, I plan to still be a contributor of articles, especially book reviews.

Don, if it hadn’t been for you, I never would have become a freelance writer. You are my mentor and boy, nobody is as prolific as you when it comes to writing or devouring books! We appreciate you!
Don, you have done a magnificent job keeping us informed (and entertained) about the San Diego Jewish community. You deserve retirement from the hard work you’ve devoted yourself to. I hope you find a successor who can at least attempt to follow in your footsteps.

80 may seem like a milestone, it isn’t. When you turn 100 and are kvetching that your walker needs to be upgraded to a scooter, all of San Diego, and all your friends outside of San Diego, will chip in and buy you one.
