Two Years Since Oct. 7 Massacre to Be Commemorated Oct. 9

LA MESA, California – Jewish Federation of San Diego, together with the Lawrence Family JCC and the Israeli American Council, will present an evening of remembrance and resilience marking two years since the October 7 attacks on 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9 at The Sound at Del Mar Fairgrounds. This year’s commemoration will feature a performance by Project Heroes, an acclaimed Israeli ensemble formed in response to the October 7 attacks. Hillel San Diego announces its “Community Briefing” at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17, on Zoom. The event will include a discussion with Karen Parry, executive director, about this year’s top priorities and campus initiatives.  Additionally, attendees will meet new Israeli fellows, Zehava and Amjad, and discuss how Hillel will continue to confront antisemitism on campus. Ohr Shalom Synagogue’s “Ta’am Torah: A Taste of Torah” will start at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21. This program is for 4-year-olds and led by Jennifer Meltzer. Sessions will include music, movement, holiday preparation, art, stories, and t’fillah. Click here to register.

CHABAD CENTERS’ HAPPENINGS

University City presents “A Discussion on How Art is Fighting the War: Featuring Guest Speakers Yael Harris Resnick and Rabbi Ben Resnick” at 10:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13. Yael is a self-taught multimedia artist and involves Judaic  themes and illustrating the land of Israel.  Ben is a rabbi, social worker, researcher, and director of operations. The Resnicks will discuss Yael’s art and Benjamin’s support for multiple businesses in Israel.

East County’s Jewish Women’s Circle presents its “Pre-High Holidays Candle Workshop” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, at the New Chabad of East County. This event will be led by Linoy Boutique and will involve designing a unique candle for your table setting. Click here to rsvp.

Poway’s Camp Gan Israel and Hebrew School announce its “Apple Picking” at 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 21, at Old Peace Field Orchards in Julian. The event will include apple picking, holiday crafts, hearing the shofar, and dipping crisp apples into honey. Click here to register.

AROUND THE COUNTY

San Diego Hebrew Day School welcomed 11 officers from the Israel Defense Force who were visiting the United States on a “reverse birthright” trip. The officers began their day by sitting down with leaders from the Hebrew Day community and sharing their personal stories of service and answering questions on the ongoing war in Israel and Gaza. From there, the officers joined the preschool’s musical Shabbat party and visited several of the elementary classrooms.

SCY High School reports that its first Mishmar of the year has met. This weekly program gives students a chance to connect with each other and with the rebbeim outside of school to learn Torah, daven, and discuss interesting and relevant Jewish topics.

Coastal Roots Farm announces its new coffee cart and farm store are now open. The cart is open from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Click here for more information.

Beth Jacob Congregation requests its congregants to complete a survey on whether they are able to host visiting members and what services are available. Click here to fill out the survey.

Chabad of University City’s Channah and Arthur Hale Jewish Educational Center Building reports that its tile installation is completed. The other flooring is scheduled to arrive next week. The Electrician has finished all the work having to do with the HVAC systems. His final projects will be the switches, outlets, and covers. The installation of the lighting has been completed. It passed the ‘above-ceiling’ inspection from the City and was granted authorization to continue. The custom cabinets are almost done and ready for installation. The elevator is currently scheduled to be delivered and installed towards the end of October. After the elevator is installed, it will be ready to have its final inspection by the City and be granted its Occupancy Permit.
