SAN DIEGO –This Shabbat, as the federal government shutdown continues into its second month, many Jewish families throughout San Diego are feeling the impact. This prolonged disruption is affecting families, individuals, and communities in real and tangible ways. From the basics of food, rent, and mortgage payments, to the psychological repercussions of significant stress and uncertainty, people and families are struggling. After missing paychecks, and as key basic benefits programs expire, families are making sacrifices and delaying valuable services. Already, our Jewish institutions are seeing increased need. And while national political decisions may be out of our hands, we can control how we show up for one another.
Hillel taught us, “Do not separate yourself from your community.” More people in our community will struggle in the weeks to come if disruptions persist. One of the most powerful aspects of being part of a Jewish community is the deep commitment we have to caring for each other. In moments of vulnerability, we lean in. We reach out. We lift up. Please keep in mind that many families affected may be experiencing financial insecurity for the first time and don’t even know they are eligible for support. Help spread the word.
