HULA VALLEY, Israel (Press Release) — This past weekend, Hula Valley became a spectacular hub of activity as 32,600 cranes were counted during their autumn migration from Europe, through Israel, and onward to various countries in Africa.

Cranes are known for their strength and endurance, and unlike many other large birds, they are capable of migrating at night. During the autumn migration, cranes travel in family groups, with parents alongside their young hatched in the spring. These family units remain connected through vocal communication, recognizing the calls of their relatives even within the vast flocks.

Inbar Shlomit Rubin, Field Manager at KKL-JNF Hula Lake, remarks: “Cranes are extraordinary! Their behavior is fascinating, and we can learn a great deal from them. At this time of year, they forage across the fields of Hula Valley during the day and gather at sunset in the wetlands, a safe refuge from predators, to rest overnight.”

Hula Valley, managed by KKL-JNF, is one of Israel’s and the world’s most important habitats for migratory birds. The wetlands provide a vital stopover, offering a safe resting place, abundant food, and the chance to build energy for the long journey ahead.
