LA MESA, California –Middle school students enrolled in the Master Art classes showcased their work Nov. 13 at the Fireside Gallery Art Show at the La Mesa Arts Academy, presenting creative interpretations of Vincent van Gogh’s most iconic paintings.

The school library was transformed into an elegant gallery, where young artists stood proudly beside their pieces, eager to discuss their inspiration and artistic process with parents, teachers, and siblings. Guests enjoyed lemonade, sparkling water, and charcuterie trays arranged with fruit, cheeses, and crackers as they moved through the exhibit.

A special display in the Fireside Room honored van Gogh’s enduring connection to sunflowers. At the artist’s funeral, his coffin was draped with a simple white cloth and adorned with sunflowers and other yellow blossoms—a poignant tribute to the joy and vitality he saw in these flowers.

As I wandered among the students’ intricate sunflower creations—many crafted from carefully folded papers—I was reminded of 2022, when Ukraine came under attack by Russia and the sunflower emerged worldwide as a symbol of solidarity. Since then, it has come to represent resilience, resistance, and hope.

I have always loved receiving sunflowers. I’m drawn to the way their petals close with the setting sun and reopen again at dawn, turning once more toward the light. They remind me that even on hard days, a new beginning waits just beyond the horizon. Their strong, upright stems speak to endurance in the face of challenge.

In some streams of Judaism, sunflowers symbolize faith, renewal, and an awareness of the divine, making them a meaningful presence in various celebrations. In recent years, sunflower seeds have even appeared on Seder plates as a symbol of solidarity with Ukraine, where the sunflower is the national flower.
